Medtronic (MiniMed 770G) insulin pumps: What's changing

People currently using Medtronic MiniMed 770G insulin pumps have until 1 October 2026 to move to a different funded pump.

You don’t have to change straight away

You have time to talk to your doctor or diabetes specialist team about the best product to manage your diabetes. The consumables for your pump will remain funded for two years until 1 October 2026.

Consumables covers infusion sets and reservoirs.

Getting a new pump

We know that change can be hard, especially when it’s something as important as an insulin pump. Your diabetes specialist team can work with you to assess the best option for you.

You will need a new special authority to change from the MiniMed 770G to the Tandem or YpsoPump.

Once approved, you can take your prescription for an insulin pump to your local pharmacy.

Accessing funded CGMs

From 1 October 2024, you can access the Libre 2 or the Dexcom One+. This allows you to run an 'open loop' system, where the CGM and insulin pump aren't connected to each other.

You will be able to access the Dexcom G6, Dexcom G7, or the Freestyle Libre 3+ if you are planning to:

  • move from the MiniMed 770G to a funded Tandem t:slim x2 or mylife YpsoPump
  • run an automated insulin delivery (AID) system ("closed-loop system")

To access these products, you will need to talk to your diabetes specialist team.

If you change your mind with the type of CGM, you can ask to be prescribed a different CGM when you see your doctor.

What if the funded brands aren’t right for me?

Our clinical advisors have told us that the devices we have chosen to fund will work for most people with type 1 diabetes. They’ve also told us that there may be a small group of people that the funded CGMs and insulin pumps will not work for.

There is a pathway for those who are unable to use the funded CGM and insulin pump options. This is through Pharmac’s Exceptional Circumstances Framework, with criteria informed by our clinical advisors.

To access funding for a different CGM and/or insulin pump, your diabetes specialist team would need to tell Pharmac:

  • the clinical reasons why the funded brands won’t work for you, or
  • the clinical reason you need to stay on your current brand of CGM or insulin pump.

We will update this page with more detail about this process once it's available.

Your next steps

You don’t have to do anything straightaway. You can continue to access funded consumables until 1 October 2026.

You will need to talk to your doctor or someone in your diabetes specialist team about your options, whether it’s trying one of the new funded brands or staying on your current insulin pump.
