How is the Hospital Medical Devices List used?
Managing and maintaining the Pharmaceutical Schedule is a core legislative function for Pharmac. This includes the development of Schedule Rules, which set out specific obligations for Health NZ hospitals. These obligations are defined in the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022.
Health NZ uses the Hospital Medical Devices List to inform the selection of devices they purchase and use to deliver their services or make available for the people who need them.
If Health NZ hospitals purchase a device that is on the Hospital Medical Devices List, they must use the negotiated national contract terms and conditions where available. Only Health NZ hospitals can access these contracted terms.
GP practices and private hospitals need to contact suppliers directly about medical devices they want to access.
How is the Hospital Medical Devices List kept up to date?
The Hospital Medical Devices List is part of the Pharmaceutical Schedule. We consulted widely to ensure the Hospital Medical Devices List reflects the devices that Health NZ hospitals use. The List supports consistency, coordination, and equitable access throughout the health system.
Pharmac works with Health NZ and medical device suppliers to update information about their products and to reflect changes in medical technology and evolving public needs.
Each month, we publish the latest version of the Hospital Medical Devices List on our website with a summary of all the changes since the last month. We also send an update to Health NZ which is integrated into their information and financial management and ordering systems.
Adding new national contracts
Pharmac is continuing its work to agree national contracts with suppliers for medical devices and for these to be added to the Hospital Medical Devices List.
We are regularly consulting on and announcing these agreements

How can new medical device technologies get onto the Hospital Medical Devices List?
We are keen to hear about new and emerging medical device technologies that could improve patient care and support future planning.
We’re working closely with Health NZ to develop a formal submission process that will support the listing of medical technologies on the Hospital Medical Devices List.
In the meantime, we’ve introduced an interim step, an online Medical Device Technology Innovation Form. This form gives you the opportunity to share information about technologies, whether already available or in development, that could offer additional value to the health system.
Your input will help us:
- Build a clearer picture of new and emerging innovations
- Support effective category planning
- Inform the development of future submission processes
- Help shape a smarter, more responsive future for hospital medical devices
At this stage, this feedback will be used for information purposes and is not a request for funding.
