Pharmac engages in a range of research including:

- clinical epidemiology
- pharmacoepidemiology
- literature reviews
- ‘business-as-usual’ budget impact analyses and systematic cost-effectiveness analyses
- evaluations of patient medicines adherence
- population health programme evaluations
- other health services research
- project evaluations.
Pharmac research has culminated in a number of medical journal articles, other publications and reports.

Pharmac funds research regularly. The Health Research Council is responsible for administering funding grants.
