We have funded three CGMs that work with insulin pumps to create automated insulin delivery systems.

Continuous glucose monitors that work with insulin pumps

Both the Tandem t:slim X2 and YpsoPump are compatible with at least two types of continuous glucose monitor (CGM). If you qualify for a funded insulin pump, you can also get funded one of the following CGMs.

Dexcom G7(external link)

Freestyle Libre 3 Plus(external link)

Your diabetes specialist team can help you compare the products and decide which is best for you.

Compare the features of each CGM

Do I need a smartphone?

The CGMs communicate to an app that can be installed on your phone. If you don't have a compatible phone, the suppliers can provide a standalone reader device.

You can get a FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus reader, free of charge, by contacting Mediray. You can call their Customer Care team 0800 106 100 (Option 2).

You can get a Dexcom reader, free of charge, by filling out a form from Dexcom(external link)

Which CGMs work with which pumps

The Ypso pump works with the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus and the Dexcom G6. The Tandem t:slim works with the Dexcom G6 and G7 and will work with the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus by July 2025..

I already have a funded Tandem t:slim X2 or MiniMed 770G

Talk to your doctor or nurse prescriber about getting a prescription for the CGMs. You'll need a new prescription every 3 months.

How many CGMs do I get?

The maximum number of devices you can get each year varies by product because they work in different ways. The year runs for 12 months from when your Special Authority was issued.

Freestyle Libre 3 Plus

  • Up to 28 devices will be funded each year.
  • Up to 6 devices on each prescription.

Dexcom G6

  • Up to 5 packs will be funded each year.
  • Up to 1 pack on each prescription.
  • Each pack contains 1 transmitter and 9 sensors

Dexcom G7

  • Up to 40 devices will be funded each year.
  • Up to 9 devices on each prescription.

Changing between CGMs

If you change CGM brand, the count towards your limit for the year restarts.

For example, you've filled 2 prescriptions of a Dexcom G6, then you will have collected 2 packs (nearly halfway to the annual limit). If you change to the Dexcom G7 halfway through the year, your count goes back to zero. You can collect 9 devices with your new prescription and another 9 devices on your fourth prescription for the year.

If, after one prescription of Dexcom G7, you went back to Dexcom G6, then you can collect another pack and your total would be 3 G6 packs and 9 G7 packs. Then after 12 months, both totals reset to zero.

What happens if I've changed from a standalone CGM?

If you change from a standalone CGM to a CGM that works with a pump, then everything resets to the date you got your new Special Authority for the CGM that works with a pump. The count of devices used resets to zero.
