Decision to list medical devices supplied by Fujifilm Sonosite Australasia Pty Ltd

Hospital devices Decision

What we’re doing

We're pleased to announce the approval of a listing agreement with Fujifilm Sonosite Australasia Pty Ltd (“Fujifilm Sonosite”) for the supply of medical devices to Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (“Health NZ”) hospitals in the medical imaging, software and associated products category.

In summary this will result in:

  • listing of medical devices in the medical imaging, software and associated products category supplied by Fujifilm Sonosite in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 August 2024 under a national agreement that all Health NZ hospitals may purchase under; and
  • Health NZ hospitals being able to continue to purchase other suppliers’ brands of medical imaging, software and associated products as the agreement is not for sole supply.

Any changes to the original proposal?

This decision was subject to a consultation letter dated 27 May 2024.

Changes to the terms and conditions have been made as a result of consultation feedback.

Who we think will be most interested

  • Health NZ staff in a range of different clinical settings including but not limited to:
    • Clinicians
    • Radiology
    • Nurses
    • Clinical engineers and maintenance services
    • Procurement and supply chain personnel

Detail about this decision

In November 2020 New Zealand Health Partnerships, in coordination with Pharmac, released a Request for Proposals (“RFP”):

RFP – Medical imaging equipment, associated consumables, accessories, software and services, and maintenance(external link).

The RFP was for non-exclusive national agreements for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.

Pharmac has been working with suppliers who responded to the RFP to seek provisional agreements. After consulting on the provisional agreement with Fujifilm Sonosite, Pharmac has decided to list Fujifilm Sonosite’s medical imaging, software and associated products in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 August 2024.

Health NZ hospitals can continue to choose which medical imaging, software and associated products they procure, including from other suppliers. Health NZ hospitals that procure medical imaging, software and associated products from Fujifilm Sonosite must ensure they do so under the terms and conditions, including pricing, in the agreement from 1 August 2024.

The list of products will be available on Pharmac’s website from 1 May 2024 in both PDF and Excel spreadsheet formats.

Our response to what you told us

We’re really grateful for the time people took to respond to this consultation. We received feedback from Health NZ about the terms of the agreement in relation to equipment provision. In response to the feedback, Pharmac engaged with relevant staff at Health NZ and revised the terms and conditions of the agreement with Fujifilm Sonosite as appropriate.
