Decision to list medical devices supplied by Diagnostica Stago Pty Limited
What we’re doing
We are pleased to announce approval of a listing agreement amendment with Diagnostica Stago Pty Limited (“Stago”).
In summary this will result in:
- listing of Stago’s laboratory equipment and consumables (“Laboratory Devices”) and point of care testing equipment and consumables (“Point of Care Testing Devices”) in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 October 2024;
- a national agreement with Stago for the above-mentioned categories that all Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora (“Health NZ”) hospitals may purchase under (“Agreement”); and
- Health NZ hospitals being able to continue to purchase other suppliers’ brands of Laboratory Devices and Point of Care Testing Devices as this agreement is not for sole supply.
Any changes to the original proposal?
This decision was subject to a consultation letter dated 13 June 2024.
Following the consultation closing, changes were made to the agreement terms and pricing schedule to clarify intent and correct administrative details identified during the consultation period.

Detail about this decision
Pharmac has previously issued a:
- Request for Proposals (“RFP”) for the supply of Laboratory equipment and consumables.
- Registration of Interest (“ROI”) for supply of Point of Care Testing equipment and consumables.
The RFP and ROI were for non-exclusive national agreements for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
In coordination with Pharmac, NZ Health Partnerships (“NZHP”) has previously released an RFP for ranges of medical devices which Pharmac may list on the Pharmaceutical Schedule. NZHP released an RFP for Point of Care Testing Devices in September 2018. In April 2021 Pharmac released a Registration of Interest for the supply of Point of Care Testing Devices to be considered for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
Pharmac has been working with suppliers who responded to the processes, and proposals were progressed to contract negotiation, to seek provisional agreements. This proposal consists of the latest agreement to arise from these processes, and we expect to consult on further provisional agreements with suppliers in these categories in the future.
Health NZ hospitals can continue to choose which Laboratory Devices and Point of Care Devices they procure, including those from other suppliers. Health NZ hospitals that procure these medical devices from Stago will do so under the terms and conditions, including pricing, in the agreement from 1 October 2024.
