Proposal to list medical devices supplied by Cardinal Health Australia 503 Pty Ltd
Pharmac is seeking feedback on a proposal to list a range of medical devices in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
What we’re proposing
Pharmac is seeking feedback on a proposal to list medical devices supplied by Cardinal Health Australia 503 Pty Ltd (“Cardinal Health”) in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 September 2022 in the cardiology equipment and accessories category, specifically:
- electrocardiogram equipment and accessories
Consultation closes at 4pm Thursday 4 August 2022 and feedback can be emailed to nerissa.ramlall@pharmac.govt.nz.
What would the effect be?
From 1 September 2022, electrocardiogram equipment and accessories supplied by Cardinal Health would be listed under a proposed national agreement (“Agreement”) that all Te Whatu Ora Hospitals may purchase under, subject to consultation and approval by Pharmac’s Board or delegate.
The Agreement would not be for sole supply and Te Whatu Ora Hospitals can continue to purchase other suppliers’ brands of electrocardiogram equipment and accessories.
The Agreement would supersede any existing Te Whatu Ora Hospitals agreements with Cardinal Health for the medical devices included in the Agreement. Any medical device listed in the Agreement and purchased by a Te Whatu Ora Hospital would be in accordance with the terms and conditions, including price, stated in the Agreement effective from the date of listing in the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
Pricing for the equipment and accessories in the Agreement, subject to any prior termination of the Agreement, would not be increased without prior consultation and approval by Pharmac.

About the medical devices
Electrocardiogram equipment and accessories
The electrocardiogram equipment and accessories category includes medical devices used to collect, measure and interpret the electrical activity of the heart. This includes electrocardiogram monitors, holter monitors and associated accessories (such as gels, electrodes and leads).
Why we’re proposing this
The ROI invited registrations of interest for the supply of medical devices where New Zealand Health Partnerships ("NZHP") has previously released RFP processes from suppliers for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
The ROI was for non-exclusive national agreements for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
Pharmac has been working with suppliers who responded to the ROI to seek provisional agreements. This proposal is the first to arise from this process and we expect to consult on further provisional agreements with suppliers in this category throughout 2022.
