Monkeypox update
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the risk of monkeypox to Aotearoa New Zealand.
Monkeypox vaccine
Te Pātaka Whaioranga – Pharmac is supporting the Ministry by exploring options and timelines to secure access to a smallpox vaccine.
There is no vaccine specifically for monkeypox. However, some smallpox vaccines can provide protection against the monkeypox virus.
Te Whatu Ora’s National Immunisation Programme team is responsible for developing an implementation plan for when a vaccine order arrives, including determining eligibility for the vaccine.
Antivirals
We are also working with the Ministry of Health and Te Whatu Ora to source antivirals to help treat monkeypox.
