Dear [name redacted]
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
Thank you for your email of 13 December 2019 asking for statistical information regarding the use of Mirena. Unfortunately, we were unable to provide the information in the exact format that you requested, as we don’t hold the information in that form.
The attached spreadsheet provides information in relation to your request. This provides information for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019, on the number of:
- Special Authority approvals for initial and renewal applications for Mirena
- Mirena devices dispensed in the community
- Mirena devices dispensed in hospitals
- Unique patients with Special Authority approval for Mirena
From 1 November 2019 the Special Authority and Hospital restrictions for Mirena were removed, meaning that Mirena can now be prescribed without restriction for contraception as well as for other indications.

We are making our information more freely available, so we will now publish selected OIA responses (excluding personal details) on our website. Please contact us if you have any questions about this.

||||
Note: The criteria description break down totals do not add up to the total number of approved applications because each application may be approved under more than one criteria description. |

Note: Elapsed renewal applications are defined as where there has been a special authority approved under this number previously, but the application is indicated as an initial application. |
