Norfloxacin – restriction change reminder

Medicines Decision

PHARMAC is reminding clinicians and pharmacists that from 1 July 2014 the restriction applying to norfloxacin tablets in the community will be amended as follows (deletions in strikethrough, additions in bold):

Maximum of 6 tab per prescription; can be waived by endorsement - Retail pharmacy - Specialist.

Subsidy by endorsement

Only if prescribed for a patient with an uncomplicated urinary tract infection that is unresponsive to a first line agent or with proven resistance to first line agents and the prescription is endorsed accordingly.

This was the subject of a consultation letter dated 25 September 2012 [PDF, 533 KB] and a notification letter dated 19 March 2013 [PDF, 142 KB].

PHARMAC agreed to delay the implementation of this decision to 1 July 2014 as at the time of the decision norfloxacin was supplied under a Tender agreement and the decision could have impacted on the supplier.
