Decision to fund MiniMed 640G and Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pumps and consumables

Medicines Decision

What we are doing

We’re pleased to announce a decision to list the MiniMed 640G insulin pump and the Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump and associated consumables from 1 November 2018 for people who meet the Special Authority criteria for access to funded insulin pumps and consumables.

There will be no changes to the current funding criteria for insulin pump and consumables. The MiniMed 640G and the Tandem t:slim X2 and consumables will be listed subject to the same Special Authority criteria that currently apply to insulin pumps and consumables.

  • The MiniMed 640G pump will replace the Paradigm 522 and 722 pumps, which will be delisted from 1 November 2018.
  • The consumables for the Paradigm pumps are interchangeable with the MiniMed 640G pump and will remain listed, except for one insulin pump reservoir which is no longer being manufactured.
  • The Tandem pump will replace the Animas Vibe pumps, which will be delisted from 1 November 2018.
  • The Animas Vibe associated consumables will remain listed until 30 September 2019 and new consumables for the Tandem pump will be listed from 1 November 2018.

We’ve made sure the MiniMed 640G and Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pumps and associated consumables are ISO certified and WAND registered for use in New Zealand.  We’ve also received clinical advice that these pumps are acceptable for use in New Zealand.

What this means

This means that from 1 November 2018, people who meet the Special Authority criteria for a funded insulin pump will have funded access to a MiniMed 640G or a Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump and associated consumables.

People currently using a funded Paradigm pump will:

  • continue to be able to access funded consumables if they continue to meet the Special Authority criteria
  • have a choice of which brand of funded insulin pump to use once the warranty on their current insulin pump expires and they continue to meet the Special Authority criteria.

People currently using a funded Animas pump will:

  • have to change to an alternative brand of pump before 30 September 2019 to continue to access funded consumables.  Due to global discontinuation of the brand, there will no longer be Animas consumables or support available to people using the Animas Vibe pump from that date.
  • most people do not need to change their Animas Vibe pump straight away. The supplier, New Zealand Medical & Scientific (NZMS), will provide a comprehensive staged replacement and training process, working with diabetes clinics, for people who want to replace their Animas pump with the Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump.

If you want to find out more about the new insulin pumps or the transition process, contact details for PHARMAC and the suppliers are provided below.

A summary of the impact of this decision on people eligible for funded insulin pump therapy is provided in the table below:

Patient situation

Insulin pump option

People who do not currently have a funded insulin pump

These people will have a choice of which brand of funded insulin pump to commence insulin pump therapy on (i.e. Tandem or MiniMed).

People whose current pump, either Animas or Paradigm, is out of its warranty period (more than 4 years old).

These people will have a choice of which brand of funded insulin pump to continue insulin pump therapy on (Tandem or MiniMed).

People whose current Animas pump is within its warranty period (less than 4 years old).

These people will be offered a replacement Tandem pump prior to expiration of their current Animas pump warranty or prior to 30 September 2019, whichever comes first.

The replacement Tandem pump will have the same warranty end date as their replaced Animas pump.

At the end of the warranty period, these people will have a choice of which brand of funded insulin pump to continue insulin pump therapy on (Tandem or MiniMed).

People whose current Paradigm pump is within its warranty period (less than 4 years old).

At the end of the warranty period, these people will have a choice of which brand of funded insulin pump to continue insulin pump therapy on (Tandem or MiniMed).
