Ipratropium bromide (Univent), solution 250 mcg per ml, 1 ml ampoule: Discontinuation
Ipratropium bromide, nebuliser soln, 250 mcg per ml, 1 ml ampoule (Univent) is used as short-term acute treatment for the reversible component in chronic obstructive airways diseases, such as chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.
We understand that Univent is usually used in a hospital setting but that it may also used in primary care.
1 ml ampoule presentation of Univent is being discontinued
At the end of December 2020 Rex Medical stopped supplying Univent (ipratropium bromide, nebuliser soln, 250 mcg per ml, 1 ml ampoule).
What PHARMAC is doing
We requested clinical advice from our Respiratory Subcommittee. They advised that Univent (ipratropium bromide, nebuliser soln, 250 mcg per ml, 2 ml ampoule) would be a suitable alternative for people using the 1ml ampoule presentation.
The 2 ml ampoule presentation of Univent will continue to be available after the end of December 2020.

Unfortunately, the supplier stopped supplying the 1ml ampoule presentation of Univent (ipratropium bromide, nebuliser solution 250 mcg per ml) at the end of December 2020.

Rex Medical advises that stock of Univent 1 ml ampoule expired on 31 December 2020. Stock was available on sale or return conditions via the wholesaler.
The Univent 1 ml ampoule presentation was delisted from the Pharmaceutical Schedule on 1 January 2021.
