Hospitals have alerted Pharmac that stock on hand of diatrizoate meglumine with sodium amidotrizoate (Gastrografin) oral liquid is short-dated with stock expiring in October and November.

Due to a global delay in manufacturing, the supplier for Gastrografin, Bayer, is unable to supply more stock until mid to late-January 2024.

Gastrografin is only listed in the Hospital Medicines List.

Pharmac has listed two alternatives of Gastrografin from the UK and Germany. Supplies of both products are very limited.

We ask hospitals to use up the Bayer Gastrografin (Pharmacode 2345579) first to preserve supplies of the alternatives.

Expired stock

As required by the supply agreement with Pharmac, Bayer must provide a credit for stock purchased which expires before it is able to be used. Hospitals are advised to hold the short-dated stock until after the expiry date lapses, and work through their wholesaler who will approach Bayer for reimbursement of unused stock.
