Diclofenac sodium (Voltaren Ophtha) eye drops 0.1%: Stock issue

Novartis has advised PHARMAC that they’re out of stock of diclofenac eye drops. This is caused by an issue with the bottle manufacturer.

Alternative treatments 

We have received clinical advice that the following could be used instead of diclofenac eye drops.

Nepafenac (brand name Ilevro)

  • This product is Medsafe approved.
  • We anticipate stock being available by early January 2021.
  • The product will be listed in the Schedule from 1 January 2021.

Ketorolac trometamol (Acular)

  • For patients with macular oedema, our clinical advice suggests that ketorolac trometamol (Acular) is a more suitable alternative.
  • This product is Medsafe approved.
  • We anticipate stock being available by early to mid-January 2021.
  • The product will be listed in the Schedule from 1 January 2021.
