Captopril (Capoten) Oral liq 5 mg per ml: Supply issue
We understand that Capoten brand liquid captopril is out of stock. Although some wholesalers may have small amounts.
The manufacturer has had difficulty sourcing the active ingredient to make the medicine.
Capoten resupply: 15 April 2021 update
We understand that the registered product is in New Zealand and is undergoing quality assurance at Health Care Logistics (HCL). We anticipate it will be released to the market later in the week beginning 19 April 2021.
Alternative product no longer available
We understand that stocks of the alternative are exhausted.
Brand Name: Captopril-Mylan Oral Liquid
Generic Name: Captopril
Availability: Late January 2021 (not funded until 1 February 2021)
Medsafe status: Not approved. Must be supplied under section 29 of the Medicines Act.
What section 29 means
Section 29 of the Medicines Act allows for medicines that are not Medsafe approved to be supplied to people. The medicine must be prescribed by someone registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand – e.g., doctors.
We know supplying a medicine under section 29 is not ideal. In this case, however, the alternative would be for patients to have no captopril oral liquid.
We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.
